Notre Musique, Jean-Luc Godard, 2004

Film screening

In the context of our current exhibition by Nira Pereg. ABRAHAM ABRAHAM SARAH SARAH we would like to show the film Notre Musique (Our Music) by Jean-Luc Godard from 2004.

It is an attempt to view and label the traces of history and the ruins of destruction - like the stone blocks of the bombed bridge in Mostar which Godard shows us. They look like tombstones of a forgotten war. Europe stood by and witnessed the destruction, and Godard watches Europe rebuild it.

Like The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, the film is divided into three parts - "Hell", "Purgatory" and "Paradise". However, it is not the angel with the sword of fire who stands guard at the entrance to paradise, but a troop of American soldiers. Despite the highly cultural arcs and omnipresent willingness to engage in discourse, Notre Musique has a quiet humour that takes the weight off the major themes of violence, morality and the depiction of violence, which also touch on the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
