Eine Welt aus Tau: Book Presentation and Talk

Dr. Christiane Hackerodt & Prof. Wilfried Köpke

Kankan Tani (1770–1799), Weidenzweig mit Sperling

Japan has a long-standing artistic tradition that has profoundly influenced European Modernism and continues to resonate in contemporary art. Traditional hanging scrolls are less museum objects than part of a lived aesthetic practice. At the same time, they express Japanese hospitality and an almost ritual understanding of the world. Contemporary abstract art may at first appear different, even opposed – yet it shares the same roots.

Dr. Christiane Hackerodt, Chair of the Dr. Christiane Hackerodt Art and Cultural Foundation Hannover and member of the board of the Kestner Gesellschaft, presents the newly published catalogue Eine Welt aus Tau. Japanische Rollbilder und Werke der Gegenwartskunst in der Sammlung Dr. Christiane Hackerodt (One World Made of Dew. Japanese Hanging Scrolls and Contemporary Art in the Collection of Dr. Christiane Hackerodt) (2025), which includes installation views from Eine Welt aus Tau | Und in jedem Tautropfen | Eine Welt des Kampfes (One World Made of Dew | And in Every Drop of Dew | A World of Struggle) (2023/24) at the Kestner Gesellschaft. In conversation with journalist and curator Prof. Wilfried Köpke, she discusses the structure of her collection and her fascination with Japanese art, illustrated through selected examples.
