Bad Gays
Reading and Talk with Ben Miller
English
Bad Gays tells the stories of "evil and complicated queers in history" from emperors to dilettantes to fascist thugs, bringing us a version of queer history that is neither sanitised nor demonised, but full of fascinating, frustrating human beings. The podcast has been downloaded nearly four million times, and the bestselling book examines how, and why, homosexuality failed, and what we might do instead.
A signing with Ben Miller will follow the reading and talk.
This event takes place in the context of the current exhibition Potentialities by Richard Hawkins. Hawkins' work is steeped in gay subculture, desire, and an obsessive engagement with queer imagery – themes that Bad Gays illuminates from a historical and political perspective.
The book Bad Gays: A Homosexual History was written by Huw Lemmey and Ben Miller and was published in paperback by Verso Books in 2023.
