On the Other Side of the Skin. The Monstrous and the Abject

Lecture and Talk with Anya Harrison, moderated by Alexander Wilmschen

in English

Anya Harrison

The lecture draws on Anya Harrison's research into monstrosity, the abject, and figures that unsettle identity and social norms — and asks how these themes play out in the current exhibition Under the Skin at MO.CO. Panacée in Montpellier (on view through October). Against this backdrop, the works by Richard Hawkins on view in Montpellier are considered and placed within the context of his oeuvre, in which decadence, horror, monstrosity, dismemberment, and obsession are central motifs.

The event takes place on the occasion of the finissage of the current exhibition Potentialities by Richard Hawkins.

Anya Harrison is a curator and writer based in Montpellier, France. She studied art history and literature at the University of Oxford, the Université de la Sorbonne – Paris IV, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Since 2019, she has been a curator at MO.CO. Montpellier Contemporain. Her research interests include sexual and body politics as well as questions of transgression, representation, and marginality (and its limits), which she often approaches from feminist, avant-garde, and subcultural perspectives.
