Jongsuk Yoon

Artist Talk

Artist Jongsuk Yoon talks to our director Adam Budak about color and form, surface and gesture, and the inspiration she found in Hannover. For the Kestner Gesellschaft, she realized the monumental, color-intensive painting "Ihme" in the upper foyer and the large-scale work "Maschsee" in the rear Lichtgraben. She describes her abstract expressionist paintings that are inspired by nature as "soul landscapes" - inner landscapes that merge into poetic narratives. The roots of her artistic practice lie in Asian and European traditions - expressionism, cave painting and Asian ink painting. About her working process, Jongsuk Yoon says, "The painting process is like a dialogue, a kind of communication between the painting and me. Ideas and thoughts formulate as I work. I work spontaneously and deliberately without a plan. I spend a lot of time seeing and thinking until I get an idea of what the painting needs."
