Lecture by Zoya Zvinyatskovska: Ukrainian fashion avant-garde of the 1990s

Ukrainian avant-garde fashion of the 1990s is an enchanting mix of the Soviet art underground and attempts to digest new experiences: informational, aesthetic, domestic, sexual. Ukrainian avant-garde fashion exploded simultaneously in Kyiv (Oleksiy Zalevskiy), Odesa (Iryna Dratva, Volodymyr Umanenko, Vanya Ren`) and in Lviv (Olesia Savenko) and captured almost all cities in the country. For a short time, fashion became perhaps the most effective medium: even contemporary artists such as Illya Chichkan and Oksana Chepelyk became fashion designers at the time.

The lecture will be given in English by Zoya Zvinyatskovska.

Zoya Zvynyatskivska works as an art critic, fashion anthropologist and independent curator. Her focus are the structures of cultural and social codes through fashion and clothing. As an invited curator, she worked on projects of the Museum of Modern Art in Odesa, the Mystetskyi Arsenal and a number of other institutions.

Zoya Zvynatskivska participates in our residency program. This residency program was spontaneously initiated by our esteemed members of the Förderkreis of the Kestner Gesellschaft. We would like to express our deep gratitude for the extraordinary generosity that the members of the Förderkreis have made in this heartbreaking moment of war. The Kestner Gesellschaft stands with Ukraine and expresses its full support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people in this terrible time.
