Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance

Independent curator and art historian, Catherine Lampert, the author of Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance, 2019 - a major touring exhibition spanning Rego’s entire career since the 1960s, with a focus on work that addresses the moral challenges to humanity - reflects Rego’s perspective as an empathetic, courageous woman and a defender of justice.

Catherine Lampert is an independent curator and art historian. She has curated numerous exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery, the Whitechapel Gallery, where she was director from 1988 to 2001. She was the curator of Paula Rego. Obedience and Defiance which opened at the Milton Keynes Gallery in 2019 and toured to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dubin.

The subjects of other exhibitions have ranged from old to contemporary masters, including Auguste Rodin, Honoré Daumier, Thomas Schütte, Rosemarie Trockel and Francis Alÿs. She co-curated Bare Life, an exhibition of postwar British painting, 1950-80 at the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur in Münster (Francis Bacon, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, R. B. Kitaj, Patrick Caulfield…) in 2014.

Her publications include Euan Uglow: The Complete Paintings (2007), Peter Doig (2011); Hurvin Anderson (2022); Frank Auerbach: Speaking and Painting (2015) and as co-editor, Frank Auerbach: Portraits of People (2022). She is currently working on the catalogue raisonné of Lucian Freud’s paintings.
