Tri Tempi by William Forsythe
Film
Choreographer and dancer William Forsythe is known for having liberated the practice of ballet from its identification with the classical repertoire and transformed it into a dynamic 21st-century art form. Forsythe's profound interest in the basic organizational principles of choreography has led him to realize a wide range of projects in the fields of installation, film, and internet-based knowledge development. For 20 years, he has been developing choreographic objects that explore the boundaries between visual art and choreography.
William Forsythe's video work Tri Tempi (2023) illustrates the principle underlying his concept of choreographic objects.
The work aims to manually bring three flexible objects, each with significantly different material properties, to maximum acceleration. Although the properties of the materials ultimately defeat the goal, the physical strategies that the materials exert on the body lead to a series of different, practical postures and gestures: an unconscious choreography.
