The Passage on the ground floor of the Kestner Gesellschaft, designed by architect Assaf Kimmel, is dedicated to interaction, exchange, and research. Together with the Art Education Department and the curatorial office, the Passage was conceived as a space for the presentation of academic and artistic projects, as an archive, and as a practice area for the kestnerkids program. In a panel discussion with architect Assaf Kimmel, the Kestner Gesellschaft team, and Alexander Wilmschen, the concept and motivation behind the Passage space will be discussed, and Kimmel’s architectural-artistic design and methodology will be presented.

Assaf Kimmel is an architect with an interdisciplinary approach. His practice operates at the intersection of architecture, installation art, performance, fashion, and speculative design. Kimmel studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, worked at OMA in New York, among other places, and founded the Assaf Kimmel Studio in Berlin in 2021. The studio’s projects are characterized by a close connection between architectural design and artistic conception. Assaf Kimmel lives and works in Berlin.

Alexander Wilmschen is interim director and curator at the Kestner Gesellschaft. He studied art history and philosophy as well as Art History in a Global Context in Düsseldorf and Berlin. Since 2022, he has curated group and solo exhibitions featuring, among others, Rebecca Ackroyd, Tracey Emin, Klára Hosnedlová, and Anna K.E. Alexander Wilmschen lives and works in Hanover and Berlin.
