As part of The Rivers They Don’t See, the first institutional solo exhibition by Som Supaparinya, the Kestner Gesellschaft presents her film Taste of Noodles. The screening will be accompanied by a Thai Food Session, where visitors will be served traditional Thai noodles — in the context of the film.

Taste of Noodles (th: รสของก๋วยเตี๋ยว, vi: Huong Vi Pho), 2006, 20.33 Min. Thai & English Subtitles

The film shows the diversity of noodle cultures in Thailand and Vietnam, which have adapted or reinvented Chinese cuisine in different ways and in different places. Both cultures share many similarities as well as differences in terms of the origin and production of noodles and how they ultimately became an authentic dish.

Som Supaparinya is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores social history, ecological structures, and colonial continuities in Southeast Asia. Her documentary and experimental practice spans installation, photography, film, and found objects. Supaparinya studied Fine Arts at Chiang Mai University and Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. She lives and works in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
