Ericka Beckman’s New Talkies

Lecture by Piper Marshall

digital

Portrait Piper Marshall , Torbjorn Rodland

Since the mid-1970s, Ericka Beckman has been developing her own visual language in film, installation and photography. Her films are structured according to the logic of children's games, sports competitions, or fairy tales, surrounded by toy-like props. Throughout her work, Beckman explores profound questions of gender, role-playing, competition, power, and control. Art historian and curator Piper Marshall situates "You The Better" (1983) and "Reach Capacity" (2020), on view at the Kestner Gesellschaft, within the artist's oeuvre, offering an art historical examination of Beckman's early Super 8 films as well as a critical look at her ongoing preoccupation with the structures of games and capitalism.

Piper Marshall, a New York based art historian and curator, has organized numerous exhibitions of contemporary art, including monographic presentations of Ericka Beckman, John Miller, Judith Barry, Angela Bulloch, Sadie Benning, Laurie Simmons, Leidy Churchman, and Nina Chanel Abney. Marshall is a PhD candidate at Columbia University, New York. Her doctoral dissertation, tentatively titled Who Speaks, explores Beckman’s work as crossing the discursive boundaries between avant garde film and the plastic arts in the late 1970s. She has received support from Museum of Modern Art, New York and support from the Royal Academy, London. Marshall has presented her research internationally at Museum of Modern Art (New York); Vincent Van Gogh Foundation (Arles); The Graduate Center CUNY (New York); Universidad de los Andes (Bogota). Her writing can be found in Artforum, Cura, and Texte zur Kunst, as well as in catalogs of Rochelle Goldberg and Josephine Meckseper.
