In his lecture, Ulrich Krempel describes the genesis of Lissitzky's exhibition: from the Dada evening at the Galerie von Garvens to the first acquisition of a drawing by Sophie Küppers, outlines the content of the show and the acquisitions by friends of the Kestner Gesellschaft. The focus is also on an attempt to reconstruct Lissitzky's position between DADA and Constructivism, Bauhaus and the emergence of a separate Yiddish culture in Eastern Europe.

Ulrich Krempel was born in 1948, he studied art history, German language and literature, and philosophy in Bochum and Rome. In 1975 he completed his doctorate on the visual language of the ROSTA windows (ROSTA-Fenster). Krempel assumed teaching and lecturing assignments in Duisburg, Essen, Kassel, Marburg. From 1980 he was curator at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, 1986 exhibition director at the Museum Folkwang Essen, 1988 exhibition director of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. 1993-2014 Director of the Sprengel Museum Hannover. Was visiting professor at the Sorbonne IV in Paris (2004-2008), is honorary professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Member of the advisory board of the German Centre for the Loss of Cultural Property in Magdeburg. Chairman of the Rudolf Jahns Foundation in Hanover; member of the Board of Trustees of the Kurt and Ernst Schwitters Foundation, Hanover and of the Advisory Board of the Monjau/Levin Foundation in Düsseldorf.
