Hans Richter's "Rhythmus 21" (1921) is a modern film classic, a star hour of abstraction, created from cardboard boxes and hand animation; sound tracks did not yet exist on celluloid. In Jonathan Harvey's classic "Ricercare una melodia" (1984), delays create a melody in dialogue with their own playing and the technique of the tape and document the search for them. Juliana Hodkinson's "when the wind blows" (2009), on the other hand, playfully takes seriously the collision of abstract art with childlike aesthetics in her Etude for Piano and Children's Toys. The film Entr'acte, which was made as an interlude to Francis Picabia's ballet Relâche, is a very humorous early work of surrealism in which, in addition to the composer, artists such as Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, René Clair and Darius Milhaud were involved and can be seen in the picture.
